Biobed

The primary biobed in sickbay is designed for surgical purposes, although it is also the default bed for examinations conducted by a medical officer. It has various hookups for surgical equipment, and is typically covered by a large sensor cluster. Surgical beds usually have a large display for vital signs and other information adjacent to the bed. Serious surgeries usually require a larger biobed with more specialized sensors and surgical equipment. Other biobeds line the perimeter of sickbay. These beds are generally used for patients under intensive care or in recovery. Information on a patients' medical status is typically displayed on a biofunction monitor at the head of the bed. Hypospray

A hypospray (colloquially, hypo) is a medical device used to inject liquids into the body. The system uses a noninvasive transport mechanism of compressed air to transfer the injectant from the device into the subdermal layer below the skin of the body, or artery. This is done without the use of a needle, ensuring that the skin is not punctured during use, thus reducing the risk of infection or pain at the site of injection. Various drugs can be used, inserted into the hypo in vials attached to the end of the instrument.

The 23rd century Federation hypospray resembled the intravenous needles of previous centuries. The typical injection site used is the side of the neck, to the carotid artery, but the hypospray can inject even through clothing. Unlike hypodermic needles, the hypospray can be used on multiple patients without worries of spreading blood-borne illnesses.

A hypospray can also be used to collect air samples in order to test it or condense air and store it for later use.

Medical Scanner

The medical scanner was a medical device utilized by Starfleet medical personnel in the 2260s. It was a small, portable unit designed to function separately from the tricorder and diagnose by means of auditory emissions. With this device, a trained physician could diagnose an illness by scanning the patient and interpreting the sounds it produced to diagnose.

Medical Tricorder

The medical tricorder was a specialized version of the standard Starfleet tricorder. It was equipped with sensors and analysis software tailored for medical diagnostic purposes. They were usually the first tool a Starfleet doctor utilized when assessing a patient's condition. Medical tricorders could function aboard ship in sickbay as well as on away missions. Medical tricorders were in use aboard Starfleet vessels as early as the mid-22nd century. Medical tricorders used throughout the years have been essentially similar in design to that of the standard tricorder, with the same available features and interface. The major difference is the addition of a deployable hand scanner. While some standard tricorders also have removable scanners, the medical tricorder's is much more advanced and can provide detailed scans of an entire individual, or give focus to a single area. They could also be used to perform quick multivariate analysis, such as the comparison of several different blood samples. While the suite of sensors installed on medical tricorders is advanced, it is generally no substitute for the advanced and specialized equipment in a sickbay facility. Although very accurate on the living, it is taught in the first year of Starfleet Medical School that medical tricorders are not as accurate on the dead.

Neural Neutralizer

The neural neutralizer was a device used at the Tantalus Penal Colony. It was an outgrowth of experimental beam neutralization technologies developed on Earth. It consisted of a room containing a chair in which the patient sat. Above the patient was the beam emitter, a round orange lens. A windowed alcove connected to the room housed the control panel and space for the therapist, who could view the patient through the window.

Operation of the device was straightforward. One control turned the device on and off, and another selected the intensity of the beam. The therapist could communicate with the patient through a microphone. The remainder of the control panel consisted of status indicator lamps.

The neural neutralizer was somewhat effective as a means of implanting suggestions. It created in the patient a profound sense of loneliness, also described as an "emptiness". Anything said to the patient while he was in this state would become his own thoughts. The effectiveness varied according to the complexity of the suggestion, the number of times it had been repeated, the volume of the beam, the strength of the patient's will, and the degree to which the suggestion was opposed by his own desires. Long term or repeated exposure could produce profound mental illness and synaptic damage. Additionally, the "emptying" effect could be immediately lethal. Used for extreme behavioral correction
