The Records Officer

Posted on Thu Jun 11th, 2015 @ 3:27pm by Commander Ashley Kennedy & Lieutenant JG Charles Kramer [PNPC: Rackham]

Mission: The Belle of Bellatrix
Location: Main Bridge [Deck 1, USS Farragut]
Timeline: 2278.50: 0700hrs.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Charles Kramer pressed his fingers to his temples and looked around despairingly at the piles of papers lying around the bridge console where he had set himself up. There was only an hour or so until the Alpha Shift came on and he began to become incredibly flustered at the thought of the Captain- or worse- Commander Kennedy catching him with the sheer amount of mess lying around.

He couldn't concentrate in his office. That silent, tiny hole in the wall on G Deck drove him mental. He was tasked with record keeping and ensuring that the Captains' Logs and crews' personal messages were transmitted to the log buoys. There was something about being up on the bridge which made it much easier to concentrate. Perhaps it was the hubbub. Or the company. Or the access.

The turbolift door hushed open and Ash stepped out onto the bridge a scowl across her face. She'd woken early, which was the first problem for the day. Unable, and unwilling, to go back to sleep, she went out for her morning run earlier than usual and encountered problem number two: a corridor was blocked for access by an engineering crew working on a faulty power junction. Although her objections to the petty officer in charge of the work crew might have been unduly vocal, she ultimately accepted her fate and backtracked. It threw off her entire rhythm and, judging by the knot in her left hamstring, she may have done some damage as a result.

So when she arrived on the bridge that morning, she was more than a little irritated. She immediately zeroed in on the white-collared officer looking rather stressed in the midst of a maelstrom of paperwork that had no business being on the bridge. She drew a deep breath in through her nose and marched past the officer of the watch, bearing down on her prey.

"What's the meaning of this?" she snapped as she got close, her jaw set forward and her eyes blazing.

The sudden appearance of the First Officer sent the files in Kramer's hands flying high into the air as he completely failed to cope with the surprise. "Uh, Commander! Good morning! I was just completing some paperwork!"

"Don't you have an office for that, Kramer?" Ash shot back instantly, remaining perfectly still while the junior officer scrambled to gather the papers.

"Yes, sir!" Kramer's insides continued their inexorable leap out of his skin as he hastily attempted to gather the work up around him. "I find it terribly quiet, sir. I'm really sorry. I just like working amid the hubbub on the bridge."

"I don't care how you find it, Mister Kramer," the first officer snapped, unwilling to concede any ground to this subordinate and determined to make him think twice about cluttering the bridge again. She gestured at the work he was frantically trying to pick up, "This is unacceptable on the bridge of a starship. If I catch you making a hazard of yourself again, Lieutenant, there will be consequences, get me?"

She watched with harsh eyes as the hapless records officer nodded an acknowledgement and rushed for the nearest turbolift. When he'd gone, she turned to the officer of the watch as though nothing had happened. "Status report, Lieutenant."
