The Last To Know

Posted on Wed Oct 28th, 2015 @ 12:17pm by Lieutenant JG Charles Kramer [PNPC: Rackham] & Chief Petty Officer Miles Watt [PNPC: Kennedy]

Mission: The Belle of Bellatrix
Location: Main Engineering [O Deck, USS Farragut]
Timeline: 2278.54 1200hrs

Paperwork!

It never ends and it's the bane of many an existence, but Chief MIles Watt wasn't one to complain. Truth be told, he didn't mind the paperwork that came with his position. As one of the senior NCOs in the department, and the leader of a team of techs, he usually ended his days with at least some bureaucratic chores to complete.

So he sat at the duty desk in the far corner of the engineering compartment and got to work. Sure, he'd rather have his hands on a damaged intermix chamber or reconnecting severed power couplings, but there were far worse jobs on the ship.

Speaking of worse jobs, he thought to himself as he spotted that odd fellow, Kramer, heading over to him. No doubt come to collect the personnel report.

"Chief!" Kramer sounded cheerful, but he never looked cheerful. "I'm just here to pick up your personnel reports for the week. How have things been down here?"

Watt straightened his back and forced a smile to try and match Kramer's cheerful tone. "Can't complain, Lieutenant," he said, pulling the personnel report out from a stack of other reports.

"No major warp problems then?" He asked with a disingenuous smile. Kramer knew nothing at all about engines - why would he? - he was just a records clerk with a commission. "I've always wondered how these things work." He said, patting something which looked like a vital system.

The chief eyed Kramer's hand; he was comfortable with him touching a locked access panel, but knew he'd need to keep an eye on the clerk. There was something about him that just didn't sit right with Chief Watt. "Trust me, Lieutenant," he said. "If there was a problem with the warp engines, even you'd have heard about it."

"I wouldn't be too sure about that, Chief." Kramer smiled, "I'm the last to know everything that happens on this ship!"

Watt smiled and handed over the report. "My point exactly, Mr Kramer."

Kramer's face fell when he realised what the Chief had meant. "Oh, yes. I understand. Thank you for this, Chief." The Lieutenant decided to remove himself, making sure to have a quick look over the instruments on his way out - you could never know too much.
