Engineering Traditions

Mission: The Belle of Bellatrix
Location: Main Bridge [Deck 1, USS Farragut]
Timeline: 2278.50 1200hrs

As Rackham stepped back onto the bridge he was shocked to see his Engineering Officer hanging over the shoulder of some young ensign at the Farragut's bridge engineering station.

Rianna DiMarco, at least in the short time they had been aboard, had scarcely been seen above G Deck and the captain was curious. "Good afternoon, Lieutenant. To what do we owe the pleasure?"

"Don't get used to it now.." DiMarco warned playfully as she leaned back, her hands settling on her hips. She had a natural dislike for bridge duty- being all sanitized and perfunctory up with the other officers. She'd rather be tucked below where the real action was. "I'm just giving the grand tour. Otherwise I'm a myth and I'll go back to patrolling my under-the-bridge shortly. This is my good kid, captain, have you met her yet? All crisp and smart and fresh out of the Academy wrapper. I love it!" Ri all but beamed as she made introductions. "Captain Rackham this is Ensign Sorensen. Abby, Captain Rackham."

Abigaël snapped to attention wondering why no one had announced the captain's arrival as was protocol. "It's a pleasure to meet you Sir."

"And you, Ensign." Rackham performed the habitual nod of greeting. "How is the Lieutenant treating you?"

“I couldn’t have asked for a better Chief, Sir.” She glanced at the chief engineer with a half smile, before regaining her composure.

Ri blushed a little and shook her head. "See, she doesn't know me yet, but the polite thing is a total bonus. We're just dong a circuit to familiarize her with all the stations and such. You'll be seeing her around a lot."

The Captain smiled slightly. There was something about Rianna DiMarco's infectious enthusiasm for, well, life he supposed, that always put him in a good mood. "I'm pleased to hear it. How else will I be able to find you in those rat-ways if there's no-one around to ask, Lieutenant?"

"Well there's these handy dandy things called intercomms, sir.." DiMarco offered with a lopsided grin. "As far as those rat-ways, though, that just adds to the sport, sir. Come on down now and then, we'll keep your mind sharp. Busy hands make honest men."

Abigaël reigned in a chuckle at her superior's words, doing her best to keep proper composure without succeeding completely. Staring at her feet she tried to make herself as small as possible.

He noted the Ensign's discomfort. It must have been hard for a complete newbie, working down in the hole with experienced engineers who- in some cases- probably looked down on her. That was the way of it though- the Chief Engineer always had a fresh assistant to train up. Tradition, he supposed.

"As you were then. Keep up the good work."
