An Unusual Source

Mission:
The Belle of Bellatrix
Location: High Energy Physics Lab [D Deck]
Timeline: 2278.49: 0830hrs.
"It's impregnable," Ensign Wesley Scott was saying as he looked at the red vacuum cleaner in front of him. It had been dubbed "The Vacuum" because no one could think of anything else to call the device that had unceremoniously swept all evidence of wrong doing from Gunning's room.
"It's not impregnable," David replied, matter-of-factly.
"How do you know!?" Scott replied.
David arched and eyebrow and his shoulders slumped in mock exasperation, "Because, Wesley, someone had to get inside of it to put... whatever devices in here make it do... the thing... that it does." He said, waving his hand around dismissively at the last part. "There's a way in, we've just got to find it.
Wesley nodded his head as if he were slowly trying to piece that together, "what do you think is in there?" He asked.
David let out a little hmph, "If we're lucky, evidence that will lead us to Gunning's killer. If we're not lucky, then probably some unknown technology that will wipe us and the Farragut from existence," He said, simply.
"Oh... well... let's hope we're lucky," Wesley replied, a sudden look of horror on his face.
"Yes, lets!" David replied, smiling brightly over the top of the device.
"How are things going?" Rackham asked from the doorway, getting his first look at the device which- according to his officers- had cleaned up after Gunning's killer. It was eerie. The object was the closest thing they had to him and deciding to bring it with them had been a tough choice for the Captain.
"Horribly," Wesley offered, glumly.
"Nonsense, Wesley," David chided. "It's going wonderfully, sir. We have an insurmountable challenge before us, and that - as a scientist - is my favorite kind of challenge to mount-- er... surmount... uhm... tackle!" David said, blushing more and more deeply as he fumbled the end of his sentence.
"Have you made any progress determining its function?" Rackham asked. "I presume it wasn't originally intended to clean crime scenes?"
David sighed as he looked back at the thing, "Sadly... no. There's nothing in our databases that match the specifications on this. I'd wager you're right, that this wasn't its intended use, but for right now... I'm not exactly sure what its intended use is. We'll know better once we get inside and can figure out what makes it tick," He explained.
"If we get inside," Wesley quipped, still scanning the casing for some sign of a way in.
"When, Wesley. When." David chided.
Rackham smiled slightly. "Will you keep me updated on your findings, Lieutenant?"
"Absolutely, sir. I was thinking about asking Miss DiMarco for help on this task. I'd like to see if we could leverage her engineering prowess to crack the proverbial shell-" He glanced down at the device, "- Well... and the literal shell as well. Provided that's acceptable to you, sir?" He asked with a smile.
"Provided she has the time, that's fine." Rackham could tell there was something more of a twinkle his science officer's eye whenever he mentioned the engineer. "I trust we'll be seeing you in the officer's mess later?"
"Absolutely," David said with a smile. "Wouldn't miss it. Would we, Wesley," David said, arching an eyebrow at his assistant.
"Not at all, sir." Wesley said with a forced smile.
