Drinks Reception - Back To Work

Posted on Tue Jun 30th, 2015 @ 2:25pm by Captain Aidan Rackham & Commander Ashley Kennedy & Commander William Carver M.D. & Lieutenant Rianna DiMarco & Lieutenant Duncan Harper & Lieutenant David Windsor & Ensign Daisy Skie-Cloud

Mission: The Belle of Bellatrix
Location: Officer's Mess [Deck 2]
Timeline: 2278.49: 2000hrs.

The hubbub in the room was sliced by the gentle tinkling of a spoon on a glass. For some reason, right across the known galaxy, it seemed to be a universal symbol. A quiet reminder for everyone to shut up.

Captain Aidan Rackham stood in the centre of the room, amber liquid swilling around in his glass as he set the spoon back on the table. Public speaking was fast becoming a hobby.

"I won't keep you too long." He began with a smile, picking out the faces of some of his more supportive officers in the process. "We're gathered here tonight in celebration of our five year mission. I hope that you'll all get the chance to get to know one another and that, come tomorrow's hangover, you will all feel that bit more comfortable with the other officers."

"Of course, we have come together under difficult circumstances and with the loss of someone who was a friend and mentor to many of us and our little gathering could be sombre, but let's look at this evening as a celebration of life and of exploration. That's what Elsa Gunning would have wanted."

He was lying, of course. Elsa would have been furious at the idea of an alcohol fueled mixer but in three days this crew had put up with more stress than most- they needed to blow off some steam. "Have a fantastic evening, thank you."

Will smirked and shook his head at Rackham's comment. He didn't know Gunning well, but he was pretty confident that she would never have approved of such a gathering. Still, sometimes the crew needed something like this to get them back on point. He raised his glass towards his new captain in recognition.

Daisy gave a polite clap at Captain Rackham's speech. She returned to gathering up another load of refreshments and a non-alcoholic drink, before heading over to a table to sit. As soon as she settled in her seat, Daisy was surrounded by others attending the party, having a good time socializing.

Still a little weirded out by the constant bringing up of the dead, Ri did her best to paste on a smile for the speech. Maybe it was a cultural things that she didn't quite get the hang of yet. The concept of getting hung up on remembering the dead and all the painful things that surrounded their ends seemed sort of morbid- like the pain was a good thing and not something that you buried and hoped would pass. She took a sip of her drink and shook the thought off. People were strange..

Abigaël kept to her corner observing the people going about. Having never met the previous captain, nor any of the officers present, she was still unsure as to why she was even present. She listened and clapped politely to the Captain's speech. Looking outside at the stars, she once again gave a silent thank you for her opportunity to be here.

Duncan stood close to the Captain and several of the Senior Staff, as the Security Officer he was here to observe and protect. But with all that had gone on it felt good to know that the Crew was in this together. Setting down his glass he clapped at the speech presented by the Captain and then took a sip. One thing he didn't relish was seeing that half this lot got to their rooms tonight.

Ash couldn't help but let a glimmer of a smile creep across her face as she clapped. Mercifully, the captain wasn't one for long speeches, but he did cut to the crux of the matter which she certainly appreciated. As everybody turned their attention back to their crewmates in their little groups of conversation, Ash straightened her uniform tunic and decided to try and make a discrete exit. She took a deep breath and started making her way through the throng of people between her and the door.
